1974 BMW 3.0 CSi

Classic, rare BMW Coupe in restored condition!

1974 BMW 3.0 CSi finished in stunning Verona Red duco with retrimmed black upholstery, grey carpets with woodgrain dashboard and door trims. Fitted with the desirable manual gearbox, this car is one of only 207 RHD versions of the 3.0 CSi manual ever built. BMW archives show that it was number ‘20’ of the final production run of the CS series BMW Coupes and was manufactured in December 1973.

In 1974, the first owner took delivery from Light Motors of West Terrace (now Adelaide BMW) and had it desirably optioned with a sunroof and integrated air conditioning. The owner kept it for 10 years and travelled approx. 90,000kms. The second owner used the BMW very sparingly and in 1993 it was taken off the road and dry stored. Around 2002, the BMW changed hands and in June 2003 number ‘20’ was obtained by a BMW enthusiast who immediately commissioned a complete ‘nut & bolt’ bare metal restoration. Showing a mere 117,528km at this time, the body shell was in excellent condition with no accident damage and without the typical rust problems these Coupes endured.

The original engine received a complete rebuild including new high compression pistons, rings and bearings and full balancing. The cylinder head was ported and polished and fitted with hardened valve seats. The camshaft sports an M-series grind with more timing and lift. The unreliable and uneconomical Bosch D-jet engine control unit has been replaced by a fully programmable Wolf 3D system while retaining the original injection components. A 5 speed Getrag overdrive gearbox replaces the original 4 speed which is a common upgrade. All mechanical, brake and suspension components have either been replaced or refurbished and a set of 16” very rare, genuine Alpina alloy wheels adorn the classic coupe perfectly.

There is a large file accompanying the vehicle which documents the service history, restoration and provenance of this car.

Since the completion of the 3-year restoration, a further two owners have sparingly enjoyed this rare BMW with the current owner purchasing the car from NSW in 2021. The BMW 3.0 CSi now shows 137,778kms and presents in ‘as restored’ condition.
