Autohaus Storage is pleased to present this 1958 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupé, an extensively documented and well-travelled example with more than 50,000 kilometres of Australian and international touring history.

​

Its Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirms chassis S827100DN as a factory right-hand-drive 3.4-litre Drophead Coupé with manual overdrive, originally finished in Carmen Red with red interior trim and a black hood. Manufactured on 4 June 1958, the Jaguar was dispatched on 26 June 1958 through Whipples Ltd of Grantham and originally registered NCT 714 in Lincolnshire.

Acquired as a restoration project in 1997 by a longstanding Jaguar Car Club of WA member, the XK underwent a comprehensive bare-shell restoration before beginning an extraordinary 28 years of enthusiast ownership, touring and club participation.

Comprehensive Restoration

​

Prior to its acquisition in 1997, respected Perth specialist Memory Lane had commenced an extensive bare-shell restoration, documented by a collection of period photographs. The body was removed from the chassis, which was separately restored, with every panel repaired and refitted using traditional techniques including lead wiping. Approximately $50,000 had reportedly already been invested before the unfinished project changed hands.

Final panel and paintwork was professionally completed in Regency Red Metallic, a later Jaguar XJ colour. Crawfords of East Perth retrimmed the interior in tan leather and fitted a new convertible hood using high-quality Mercedes-Benz hood material. Final assembly was well underway by 1999, with the XK returning to the road around the turn of the millennium.

Developed to be Driven

​

The XK150 was deliberately restored and developed with driveability and long-distance touring in mind. Its XK engine has been enlarged from 3.4 to approximately 3.8 litres, with improved cooling provided by an aluminium radiator and dual electric fans.

​

The original Moss gearbox was replaced with a fully synchronised Jaguar Series 1 XJ manual gearbox with overdrive, while further touring-focused upgrades include Quickfit front brake calipers, a 3.54:1 differential ratio and later-style rear lighting for improved visibility.

​

Following its restoration, the XK covered more than 50,000 kilometres in the hands of its long-term enthusiast owners, participating in Jaguar National Rallies in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Newcastle, Hobart, Gold Coast, Canberra, South Australia and Albury/Wodonga. At the 2001 Jaguar National Rally in Melbourne, it was awarded Gold in the D'Etat Class, together with a number of “Most Desirable Car” awards at other local and national events.

A Remarkable Touring History

​

In August 2001, the XK was driven from Darwin to Alice Springs as part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of Les Taylor and Dick Rendle's famous 1951 XK120 open-road record, before continuing through to Adelaide. A commemorative plaque remains fitted to the glovebox. The car also travelled to Tasmania in 2007 for the XK150's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Perhaps most remarkably, in 2008 it was shipped from Western Australia to the United Kingdom to participate in the international XK60 Diamond Celebrations at Goodwood and Cowdray Park, marking 60 years since the introduction of Jaguar's XK120. Following the event, the XK was toured through Ireland before returning to Western Australia.

A familiar car within the Western Australian Jaguar community, this XK150 was also featured on the cover of the Jaguar Car Club of WA's JaguarsWest magazine on several occasions, including May 2001, February 2005 and July 2006.

​

This is no trailer-kept concours car, but something far more engaging - a comprehensively restored XK150 that still presents beautifully more than 25 years after its restoration, with a remarkable history of Australian and international touring and driven as Jaguar intended.
